Aconcagua – highest mountain in South – America and beyond Asia – 6,962 m
Situated in the Argentine Andes near the Chilean border, the Aconcagua lies only 160 km away from the capital of Chile, Santiago. The eroded volcano has five huge glaciers. An acclimation time is necessary on the mountain because there is only 40% of the air pressure there is at sea level. Climbers fear the heavy snow storms that come directly from the near Pacific. These storms have already destroyed tents and can make an ascent pretty difficult.
